The GALERIE SCHMIT, located between the Place de la Concorde and Place Vendôme, at 396 Rue Saint-Honoré within the first district, exhibits on two levels a unique collection of works by the great FRENCH MASTERS of the XIXth and XXth Centuries. Pre-Impressionism, Impressionism, Pointillism, Nabi, Fauvism, Cubism, Paris School, Montparnasse and Montmartre Schools, without forgetting all the other French Modern painters.
The GALERIE SCHMIT, founded in 1929 by Mr. Jean Schmit, Manuel Schmit’s grandfather, specialized in the trade of Old Master paintings of the XVIIth and XVIIIth Centuries. He built up a collection of art books comprising about 30.000 volumes in which included sale catalogues from the XVIIIth Century to the present day. It is probably the most important private collection of art books in the world which is today a remarkable tool.
On his father’s retirement Mr. Robert Schmit, Jean Schmit’s son, entered the firm in 1944 and set up at the present address in 1948. He gave up dealing Old Master paintings to devote himself entirely to paintings by great French Masters of the XIXth and XXth Centuries, from Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, to Picasso, Chagall, de Staël, Villon… At the same time, as from 1950, he began to take an interest in the French painter Eugène BOUDIN ( 1824 - 1898 ). He organised in 1965 a “One Man Show” on Boudin which was exhibited on three floors comprising 172 paintings and works on paper.
Since this date important Exhibitions are organised at the Gallery mainly devoted to « MAÎTRES FRANÇAIS XIXème-XXème », or to “One Man Shows”.
In 1982, after a one year training period at Sotheby’s in London and New York, his son, Manuel Schmit, joined the gallery.
Today, after more than 25 years in this institution, Mr. Manuel Schmit has been managing the gallery for 15 years. In addition to travelling throughout the world to maintain contacts with private collectors, curators, or directors of museums as well as collectors or their heirs, while carrying on with his expertise.
After a long period of research, Robert Schmit published through Editions Galerie Schmit undertook to compile the « Catalogue Raisonné de l’Oeuvre peint d’Eugène BOUDIN ». In 1973, three volumes were published, including the description of 3650 paintings among which 3500 are reproduced. Then, in 1984, Mr. Robert Schmit, published the « First Supplement » comprising 204 paintings and, in 1993, the « Second Supplement », written in collaboration with his son. Manuel, comprising 629 paintings.
The « Catalogue Raisonné de l’Oeuvre peint » de Stanislas LÉPINE (1835 - 1892) », comprising 810 paintings listed of which 671 are reproduced, was published in 1993. A catalogue devoted to Toulouse Lautrec’s Master « René PRINCETEAU, Catalogue Raisonné "Chevaux et Cavaliers" » was published the following year.
Between 1992 and 1999, Robert and Manuel Schmit published through Editions Galerie Schmit the « Catalogue Raisonné de l’Oeuvre peint d’André DERAIN ( 1880 - 1954 ) » compiled by Mr Michel Kellermann, in three volumes and comprising 2 448 paintings. In 2003, the Galerie Schmit organized, within its walls, an important exhibition of this master comprising about twenty exceptional paintings, nearly two hundred drawings never before shown to the public, and fifteen or so sculptures seen for the first time. This exhibition was a great success.
In 2004, Mr. Manuel Schmit was able to show after several years of personal research, a very beautiful Retrospective of works by Jacques VILLON (1875-1963), which astonished a wide public by the quality of the Master’s painting technique, masterful drawing, and use of lively colours.
At this period, Mr. Manuel Schmit went for the first time to Moscow, and was very impressed by the enthusiasm and taste of the Muscovites for Fine Art. He organized with a view of presenting, in September 2005, for the first time, at the Moscow World Fine Art Fair a magnificent collection of XIXth and XXth century works representative of his activity.
Because of the immediate success of this fair, he decided to exhibit again in Moscow in 2006 and 2007, and both selections of works have aroused a real interest from Russian art lovers.
Resolutely forward-looking, he will take part in the first Shanghai Fine Jewellery and Art Fair, which will be held in China mid-October 2007. In this way, he is continuing incessantly to develop his contacts and promoting his gallery throughout the world.
