The year 1959 was crucial in Alechinsky's career since the artist participated at the group exhibition "European Art Today" in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota, together with Asger Jorn, Chillida, Saura and Tapiès. The same exhibition traveled to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art and finally at the Baltimore Museum of Art. In the same year, Alechinsky's paintings have been shown at the the Palazzo Grassi in Venice in confrontation with works by Dubuffet, De Kooing, Pollock and Bram Van Velde.
"Les deux étages" 1959( The two floors ) is very representative for this period in Alechinsky's work. Other works from 1959 belong to several important museums like the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Madrid.
This oil painting has also been exhibited at the Venice Biennial in 1960 and at Gallery Toninelli in Milano. It is illustrated in the book "Alechinsky" by Jacques Putman, Fabbri Editions Milano, 1967.
The title "Les deux étages" refers to the artist's youth. Hence, the painting is autobiographic.
